WINTERSVILLE — The Italian American Cultural Club presented its annual scholarships at the July 10 meeting held at St. Florian Hall in Wintersville.

The recipients were Jack Marx, Gabriella Capaldi, Anthony DeFallo, Lexi Biasi and Virginia Olszewski. The scholarships are awarded in memory of club members’ loved ones.

Gabby Capaldi’s scholarship was presented by Michele Belardine Fabbro in memory of her mother, Virginia Belardine.

In memory of her father, Archie Petrella, Elida Petrella presented a scholarship to Anthony DeFallo.

In memory of her sister, Pierina DeMichele, Assunta Olivieri presented a scholarship to Jack Marx.

Presenting a scholarship to Lexi Biasi in memory of Craig Petrella were his widow, Anita Petrella, and sons Billy, Jay and Mike.

Marge Talarico presented a scholarship in memory of her husband, Joseph Talarico. Virginia Olzsewski is the recipient.

Michele Fabbro, vice president of the Upper Ohio Valley Heritage Festival, reminded members about the July dinner at McClure House Hotel in Wheeling honoring club member Lou Gentile, former state senator, as the Italian American of the Year.

Tami Cashioli reported on Campo Italiano, noting the children learned about Bologna, which is home to Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of the radio; Florence, home to Carlo Lorenzini (Carlo Collodi) who wrote “Pinocchio;” the world’s first botanical garden created in Padua in 1545; Montesilvano, the birthplace of Dean Martin’s father; and the houses of Bari.

Carm Gentile applauded Cashioli for her work with the annual event.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by Rick Pastre and Al Provenzano.

Mike Biasi won the 50-50 drawing, donating it back to the club. The dinner winners were Jay Petrella and Irma Filippi.
