More bureaucracy

To the Editor, Governor Justice’s solution to proposition 2 simply creates another layer of bureaucracy in state government. Please explain why we should pay taxes to have the taxes refunded. Simply eliminate the tax. We do not need more employees in Charleston accomplishing nothing. Anyone who has had to deal with the recent debacle with the DMV computer being down knows Charleston can’t do it better. As far as the billion dollar surplus goes, does is not make sense to replace the antiquated computers that the DMV uses with a newer system? Al Rudder Weirton

The pitfalls of tax elimination

To the Editor, On November 8, West Virginia voters will decide whether or not to approve Amendment 2, which if approved, will allow the state legislature to eliminate tangible personal property taxes for businesses as well as the personal property tax for vehicles, without an agreed upon plan to make up at least $500 million a year in lost revenue for counties, cities and schools. This is the definition of fiscal irresponsibility. What will happen if our state budget surplus turns into a deficit? Where do you think the money will come from to make up the deficit? I have a bad feeling ...

Haworth Memorial Art Exhibit celebrates legacy

To the Editor, Our Upper Ohio Valley is rich with artistic talent due to the efforts of many local teachers. It was in 2009 when my father, Dr. Ray Greco, and the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center decided to highlight one of our area’s great teachers-Mr. J. Robert Haworth- who taught at Weir High School from 1932 to 1969. This is the 14th year that the Museum has been honoring his very talented students. The IRA bill helps families

To the Editor, The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has already brought relief to families in West Virginia. The act addresses multiple issues that have needed attention and had been put on the back burner for far too long. These issues are fighting climate change, a new corporate minimum tax to ensure big businesses pay their share and creating good-paying clean energy jobs. Fighting to stop the current climate crisis in a coal state used to seem like an out-of-reach goal, and thanks to the IRA, it is not only possible, it has already begun.
