The pain of loss

To the Editor, Have you ever been in a situation where someone close to you has died? A friend, a neighbor, a family member, a co-worker, or just a mere acquaintance, or a cousin, grandparent, an aunt or an uncle. It comes sudden, without warning. And it is usually when you least expect it. Death has no warning. Death has its own timeline. We can’t control our time here on earth. But when death comes to someone that you are close to, it is like a shellshock. It stuns you. It shocks you. It nauseates you. It makes you angry. It makes you break down and cry. If you haven’t ...

Transparency needed in county

To the Editor, In July 2016, the Hancock County Commission refused to renew their animal shelter operation contract with the nonprofit who had operated the county shelter for over twenty years. Then, they immediately requested a legal opinion from the W.Va. Attorney General’s Office regarding legal rights to a shelter excess levy balance of over $360,000 raised on behalf of the nonprofit. In March 2017, the Attorney General provided a legal opinion stating that the Commission did not have a right to the accumulated funds and recommended the funds be returned to the taxpayers. A ...

A bad game of chess

To the Editor, President Donald Trump is playing a bad game of chess on the world stage. With his leadership and the backing of some conservative pundits on the Fox News Channel and some Republican senators, he is backing America to the edge of being recognized as the bad guys on the block. G.W. Bush and Dick Cheney’s presidency owns the invasion of Iraq with lies that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. If it’s the same game plan with Iran, using lies from the White House about Iran’s intent to develop nuclear weapons, with President Trump’s erratic behavior, if he would ...

Crisis in the church has been addressed

To the Editor, I don’t know who writes the daily editorial for The Weirton Daily Times, but I take issue with the one written on January 3, 2020. The writer claims “The church’s sexual abuse crisis is not going away until Roman Catholic leaders get serious about cleaning it up” and two, “In terms of rebuilding trust with those of the faith....” I am sorry, but the church does not have a sexual abuse crisis today. That was addressed with policies and safeguards put in place 20 years ago. What we have today is a trickle of allegations no more than the public school system ...

Urban Mission extends thanks

To the Editor, On behalf of the Urban Mission, its staff and board of directors, I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to the Ohio Valley for the loving generosity it demonstrated toward the care of so many people throughout 2019. “Love Works” was the Urban Mission’s theme for 2019, and time and time again, our communities provided a wonderful example of how love truly does work. For all those who prayed, donated time, financial gifts, food, resources, household items, coats and Christmas toys, thank you for providing some of the most basic needs for the most ...

Cable not worth the cost

To the Editor, I sit trying to figure exactly what are we all paying for. I have seen our TV commercials go from three now up to seven while watching programing. Our bills don’t give us a break for wasted time. Yep, we are paying for stupid bird and animal commercials that are like the re-runs or Groundhog Day over and over again. It’s time we, the consumer, get a break from all this silly stupid stuff. It’s time for everyone to start doing away with cable, and when they finally lose enough customers just maybe they will figure out we have all had enough. Another raise ...
