Caught: Police were told by 911 dispatch on Thursday that two male individuals were trespassing on JSW Steel’s property and stealing copper. Wells Township police and JSW security personnel had surrounded one of the individuals, having been found hiding in an old pipe shop. Police found the man’s cellphone, binoculars, cigarettes, flashlight, gloves, hat and empty 20-ounce can of alcohol. Police were shown a book bag full of copper wire and tools. The man, who police said smelled strongly of alcohol, claimed all of the belongings. He admitted to taking a Subutex as he was being surrounded. About $500 worth of materials were recovered, but the other individual could not be located.
Throwing stones: An Aetna Street resident told police Nov. 4 that he was inside his house when he heard glass breaking and ran outside. The man said he saw a man and woman fleeing and observed the driver’s side break light of his vehicle to be broken with a brick sitting on the roadway. The first man said he believes the two individuals damaged the vehicle and he would like to press charges. Reports noted that other individuals were outside and stated they did not know what happened to the vehicle.
Charged: Jaden Taylor Lancaster, 19, 121 Aetna St., assault, Nov. 3; Jacob Charles Pemberton, 34, 125 Aetna St., domestic violence (third-degree felony), assault and resisting arrest, Nov. 3.
Steubenville Police
Long way home: Police were notified someone was driving erratically in the area of Efts Lane, Friday. They located the vehicle in a parking lot and reported seeing “two elderly persons on the passenger side of the vehicle who appeared to be struggling to get to the front door of the residence.” As the officer got out of his car to assist he said both fell “as a result of tripping over a walking cane.” They said they weren’t injured and didn’t want medical attention, so the officer helped them into their residence. The female who was driving advised they’d been in Pittsburgh and it “is very difficult for her see at night while driving.” Police spotted a large dent in the rear passenger door with fresh yellow paint “as if (it struck) a fire hydrant,” but didn’t find one in the area showing signs of being hit.
Big reveal: A large crowd setting off fireworks was reported at Piece of Pie Park, Friday. Police arrived to learn there’d been a gender reveal party and the parties involved had left the park. Police told them the park is “no longer open to the public due to numerous issues that have taken place (there) in years past.”
Overreach: A woman caused a disturbance at a North Hollywood Boulevard business, Thursday. Employees said the woman became upset when she wasn’t permitted to return an item that was not returnable and “reached over the counter in an attempt to steal a new item.” The store owner said she struggled with her as the customer “continued grabbing for items inside the (display)” until the woman relented and told her “it was not worth her going to jail.” The woman then left the store, but on her way out she vented her anger by “knocking items off (shelves) and trashing the place.”
Bad move: A Buena Vista resident told police his vehicle, motorcycle and home were all egged, Saturday. He said it was caught on his Ring camera, which he’s going to forward to detectives. He said the perpetrator is a juvenile he recognized.
Rocky road: Juveniles were causing problems in the 900 block of Sherman Avenue, Saturday. As an officer approached, he saw one child “throw a large rock at a stop sign in the parking lot” in front of the school. Police sent the rest of the children home, then spoke with the mother of the child they saw throwing the rock.
Generous ex: A man in the 100 block of North Fourth Street said his ex stole $300 from his bank account, Friday. He said his ex and her friend were in his apartment when his ex asked her friend “how much money she needed for her rent” and the friend told her $300, then logged into his bank account and transferred the money without his permission. He couldn’t identify the second woman but told police he wants to pursue the theft.
Backlash: A woman who told her live-in boyfriend to move out the day before told police she returned home to find he’d tried to get in her home to retrieve his belongings, Thursday. She said she thinks he broke the back door of her residence, trying to get in. She agreed to let him gather his belongings while police were present. She didn’t want to pursue charges for the damage caused to the door.
Unresponsive: Police were asked to assist Steubenville firefighters with an unresponsive male on Water Street, Thursday. Firefighters said the man was awake when they arrived and able to answer basic questions, so they did not administer Narcan. He declined medical assistance.
Gone: An Oakmont Avenue resident told police she left her car running while she ran into a day care center to pick up her children and when she returned a few minutes later it was gone, Thursday. The vehicle was a 2006 red Ford Escape.
Booked: A woman was booked into the county jail after police were called to a downtown residence for an apparent overdose, Thursday. Steubenville firefighters were already at the scene and reported administering Narcan to the woman, who then was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Police allege Alexis Freeman, 42, 109 S. Ninth St., Steubenville, had already been given two overdose forms and was booked into the county jail on a charge of drug abuse.
Fallout: A city resident wanted police to help him get his dog back from his former girlfriend, Thursday. He said they ended their relationship and the woman was “only keeping his dog from him to be spiteful,” telling police he paid for it but he let her keep it for a time so her grandchildren could spend time with it. Police told him they couldn’t force the woman to give him the dog, and said when they spoke with her she produced paperwork from the breeder showing the date the dog was purchased and listing her name as the owner, as well as the price paid for it. Police broke it to the man that the dog would be staying with his ex as “she is the rightful owner.”
Ride share: A Wal-Mart employee told police she was chasing a shoplifter through the parking and heard the perpetrator on the cell phone telling an accomplice, “They are chasing me, where are you at?” She said the thief eventually made it to a vehicle and escaped, but the stolen merchandise was recovered.
No authority: A caller in the 1300 block of Oak Grove Avenue told police a woman who was in the residence needed to “calm down … or leave,” Friday. The woman said she was willing to leave but she wanted her belongings before she did, but the other woman said she “didn’t know where it was.” Police told them both it was a civil matter, and informed the caller she couldn’t force anyone to leave the property since it wasn’t her residence.
Eyes wide open: Police responded to an Eve Drive location to assist an elderly resident who said she had a snake in her house, Friday. Police checked the residence and couldn’t find the reptile.
Big bark: A man “trying to do work” on a property in the 1300 block of Euclid Avenue said a man residing at a neighboring property wouldn’t put his dogs in the house, Friday. He admitted the dogs never left the porch or behaved aggressively, and police told him that as long as the animals stay on the neighboring property the owner doesn’t have to put them in his house. They also told the owner of the dogs that as long as his dogs stay on his property he’s not violating the city’s leash law. Police noted the dogs were not aggressive “and two other workers walking out of the neighbor’s stated they have no problems working while the animals were on his porch.”
Acting out: A man in the 500 block of Lawson Avenue was “yelling in the roadway at vehicles as they passed by,” Friday. Police found him on a family member’s porch, but said as they talked with him “he only became more upset.” He said he told them he didn’t want to talk to them and he only wanted his cell phone back, so they retrieved it from the family member’s residence.
Stressed: A Market Street resident reported a verbal disagreement with a neighbor “over the common room TV,” Saturday. The pair had to be separated by JMHA security.
Wouldn’t drive: Police found a man sleeping in the 700 block of Market Street, Saturday. He told them he’d been drinking “and knew he could not drive home.” Police gave him a ride home.
Cited: Annette D. Castner, 55, Belvedere Drive, Bloomingdale, failure to control following a three-car chain reaction accident Thursday in the 900 block of Lincoln Avenue.
Cited: Aimee M. Vein, 47, 1263 state Route 152, Bloomingdale, failure to control following a two-car collision Thursday on Sunset Boulevard at Negley Avenue. Vein told police she was eastbound on Sunset when she lost control of her vehicle and spun into the westbound lanes, into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The other driver complained of knee pain.
Cited: Jonathan M. Robinson, 28, 820 Rosswell Ave., Steubenville, driving under suspension.
Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to the owners/occupants of properties at 405 Lawson Ave., garbage bags piled beside the front porch; 614 Hermania Ave., front, back and side yards allegedly filled with litter, junk, scrap metal and junk vehicles.
