Democracy or ochlocracy

To the Editor, What form of government do we have today? A loud voice resonates across the United States: “A democracy, of course.” The voice is echoed throughout the entire media with but minor exception. It comes from not only the media but from universities and from citizens walking the streets, especially in large cities. Forget the fact the founders created a constitutional republic. Ochlocracy, or mob rule, can be the terminal result of a democracy in which fraud and lawlessness ultimately prevail. But is this possible in our land where democracy appears to be firmly ...

Apologizing for a misunderstanding

To The Editor, In a letter dated Saturday, June 29th, I stated that the Hancock County Democratic Committee had been invited to join us, the Republican Committee, on the roadside, to celebrate Flag Day in a show of bipartisan, patriotic American fun. In the letter, I made a point to note that the Democrats had not responded to our invitation, and felt that this “unsurprising” snub was a sad commentary on the unpatriotic nature of their party’s ideologies. However, I was quickly contacted by the understandably confused Kathy Link, their county committee chair, who told me no ...

No invitation was extended

To the Editor, On June 14 (Flag Day) and 15, 2024 the Hancock County Democratic Executive Committee, the Hancock County Democratic Women, along with Olivia Dowler, candidate for West Virginia House of Delegates District 2, attended the West Virginia State Convention in Charleston. During the Convention, our delegation participated in the patriotic duty of selecting delegates to the National Convention that will take place in Chicago, this August. Thank you to all of those who took time to travel at their own expense, to Charleston and participate in the selection process. Meanwhile, ...

Showing our patriotism

To the Editor, On Friday, June 14, the Hancock County Republican Committee held a carefully non-political roadside event, in recognition of Flag Day. No politics, no campaigning, despite the attendance of both State Delegate from Hancock Mark Zatezalo, and WV State Senator Laura Wakim-Chapman and her children, who came up to Weirton from Wheeling. Just celebrating Flag Day. We had a decent turnout for a workday, despite some nasty weather initially— which threatened all day, but of course didn’t start until almost exactly 4:00, when the event began—but it passed quickly, ...

Or was He just watching for fun? 2024 What is happening in the world today is shameful. Merciless death. Wars in Ukraine, Russia and the Middle East. Israel and Hamas war and spreading. All for what? Lacking trust, obedience

To the Editor, I declare at the onset that I am writing as an Episcopal priest. In our musical repertoire the old-fashioned Gospel song, “Trust and Obey,” was not a song we turned to, practically at all. But as I listened to several news channels over the past few weeks, it occurred to me that one of the all-encompassing issues with politics in America is a lack of trust and a revolt against obedience — two key words in that song. It appears that the United States as a nation has lost a great deal of obedience in the behaviors of its people, without regard to age. Gangs in some ...
