Holmes and Watson return Saturday

WEIRTON — Cloak & Dagger On the Air will continue its eighth season of live radio drama at 4 p.m. Saturday with The Memoirs of Holmes and Watson’s “Reigate Squires and Crooked Men.”

Pete Fernbaugh, artistic director and head writer, has adapted two adventures from the second Sherlock Holmes collection, “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes,” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The first story, “The Adventure of the Reigate Squire,” finds Watson relocating Holmes to the country so the detective can recuperate from a case. A local murder and peculiar burglary ends up monopolizing their attention.

The second story, “The Adventure of the Crooked Man,” sees the death of a well-regarded colonel, seemingly at the hands of his wife.

“When people ask me which episodes are audience favorites, I don’t have to think too hard,” Fernbaugh said. “People not only love Holmes and Watson, they love the actors who play them in our productions — John E. Reilly and Robert J. Gaudio. Throughout the years, we’ve seen many variations on these characters, but for our show, we provide straightforward adaptations, true to the original text and true to Doyle’s vision and intent.”

Other troupe members include the Wayward Saints, featuring Fernbaugh, Joey Albus, Bethany Fernbaugh, David Gaudio, Clare McDonald, Malachi McClendon, Ralph Parissi, Terri Perry and Dave Zanieski. Child actor Abby Perry returns to star in the latest chapter of Emily Penelope’s Fabulous Flights of Fancy, “Operation: Brain Game.”

“I created Emily Penelope with the intent of paying homage to the classic serials of the Golden Age of Radio, such as Little Orphan Annie and the Adventures of Superman,” Fernbaugh said. “I’ve had a lot of fun updating this format to a contemporary setting and featuring a modern kid who uses her imagination to process the pressures of growing up in an age where kids are forced to grow up too fast. Although her problems are presented in a current context, they’re timeless and relatable to all generations.”

Sound effects will be performed by the Holy Foley Molies. Classical pianist Roberta Fedoush will accompany the episode with a score derived from various works of composers. Cloak & Dagger On the Air strives to give audiences an immersive experience that engages the theater of their imagination in creating a fully-realized storytelling adventure.

Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Troubadour R.J. Gaudio will perform a set of classic pop, folk and rock favorites prior to the show.
