Where will all the children go?

To the Editor, According to the Jan. 25 edition of the Dallas News, there have been 26.313 forced-birth rape victims in Texas since that state’s total abortion ban has been enacted. Remember in 2021, when Gov. Greg Abbott vowed to eliminate rapists from the streets of Texas after intentionally excluding exceptions for victims of rape and incest? (Associated Press, USA Today, Business Inside and Mother Jones.) Either the governor of Texas was misinformed, an incompetent leader, a jester or, well, just a liar. Where will all of the children go? Republicans tell us “the ...

Appreciative of honor

To the Editor, Please permit me to take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation to all those people who were instrumental in giving me the highest honor I’ve received. Hancock County Schools Superintendent Dan Enich, right before the Weir-Madonna high schools’ latest basketball matchup, announced to those in the bleachers that he was citing me with one of his “Game Changers” awards. I was a bit stunned. However, what he said next was something I never imagined: Weir High School’s new girls’ softball field would be named after me. As a retired teacher/coach ...

The aftermath of Valentine’s Day

To the Editor, So, did we get our loved ones their Valentine’s wish? No, I’m not talking about a new vacuum cleaner! I’m talking about a nice dinner, flowers, a decent card, or just spending time together for one day. Or one night. One time to spend with each other. And the patridge in a pear tree doesn’t compare to this. Something about this cartoon character named Cupid who strikes back his bow. I never met this character that looks like a baby, and wears a survey hat. He wears only diapers, and nothing else. But he carries a bow and an arrow. Then, and only then, he ...

Oh what a life it’s been

To the Editor, My life in a nutshell: I am 88, can’t skate, walk much slower and think a lot slower, but oh, what a life it’s been. Fate blessed me: Born in 1935, escaped high school in 1953, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. I worked at Weirton Steel for 42 years and had a few bumps along the way. But, I am happy to say, oh, what a great life it’s been. Maybe God will grant me a few more years. I just want a peek to see what the future generations having coming in the future. The beginning is not promising. America’s new image: Congress is a circus without a purpose. ...

I am alive again

To the Editor, Back in September of last year, I wrote about having tumors in my body. One in my heart, the other in my colon. This was a big scare to me. As I was checked with procedures called colonoscopy, and TEE, the tumors were found. The TEE system involved inserting a mini camera down your throat, then exploring any formalities in the explored area. The series was on a positive note…with the tumor so small that it was almost gone. Yay for me. Then there was the colonoscopy. Sedated, and put to sleep, the cameras went inside my colon to find a white sac inside my colon. ...

Who should have control?

To the Editor, For centuries, women hopelessly dreamed of having control of their own bodies. How is it that men have control over their bodies but women don’t? We live under the same rules but don’t have the same rights. How does that happen in a democracy? Why would a woman, or child, want an abortion? First, she is just a child, with a child’s body. It’s absolutely horrendous, unjustifiable, masochistic and tragic to force a child to have a baby. Second, it is medically unsafe for a woman or child to deliver a child. Third, a child fears bringing shame on her family ...
