Childhood immunizations yield healthier children without exemption

To the Editor, As a parent of two and an educator, I am troubled by the discussion surrounding SB 535, creating religious and philosophical exemption for school-required immunizations. West Virginia has one of the most effective school immunization policies in the nation. Over the last several years, four states (California, New York, Maine and Connecticut) have mirrored their school immunization requirements on ours after their states experienced outbreaks of measles that resulted in hospitalizations. This is not a partisan issue; this is a public health issue. These ...

Get them fixed

To the Editor, After a couple of phone calls and being told we will get right on it, at least 10 street lights are out and I cannot understand nobody fixes them. Get rid of the 50-year-old lamp covers that are a filthy mess from the milll. Three are out on the overhead bridge leading downtown and another three are out in front of the mill heading into the gate to the tin mill. There are two out entering the downtown area plus another down by the center. The Cove Road area in front of our city building headed towards the railroad tracks is a joke. It’s never been repaired ...

Honoring a great one

To the Editor, This past December, the Steelers and the NFL prepared to honor Franco Harris and the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception, chosen by the NFL and many sports media venues as the greatest football play ever. Indeed it was a great play and brought back many thrilling memories of the Steeler dynasty from the 70’s. Unfortunately, Franco’s untimely passing just days prior to the celebration certainly dampened the mood. However, the Steelers did have the ceremony and posthumously retired Franco’s number. But you may not have heard much about another Pittsburgh ...

The beginning and the end

To the Editor, The Big Bang: Will the universe eventually collapse? To some observers, the human race was created to record the universe’s presence. Without some intelligent life form there’s nothing. The Big Bang Theory, and then the collapse of the universe, is a reasonable assertion. The human race mimics the universe down to the last detail. We start life off with a big bang. Expand to our personal greatest heights, and then slowly start to collapse. Steve Kopa Weirton

Recognition of student athlete needed

To the Editor, Last week a Weir High student athlete accomplished a feat that has not been duplicated in nearly 60 years. “G” Cross, a junior basketball player, scored 45 points in a victory over Harrison Central High School. 45 points is the third highest individual point total by a Weir High student athlete since the great Fritz Williams scored 55 against East Liverpool and 46 points against Toronto. If you are not aware of “G” Cross’ accomplishment, you are probably not alone. Instead of celebrating it in the press, it was relegated to a brief mention on page two of ...

Esposito has earned praise

To the Editor, At the November Follansbee Chamber of Commerce Recognition Dinner, Dr. Carmel Esposito was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Esposito has been a service to others throughout her professional career and her volunteerism. Esposito impressed me with her tenacity for higher education at a time when women were not as visible in professional roles. She began her career in nursing in 1954, completed her bachelor of science in nursing in 1978, master of science in 1988 and doctor of education administration in 1993. Early in her career, she worked in medical ...
