Class of ‘71 reuniting

To the Editor, As a member of the Weir High Class of 1971 reunion committee, I wonder if those fellow classmates realize how much time and effort is spent in organizing a class reunion. It is 2021 — We of the class of 1971 have been out of school for “50” years. Wow! Our reunion is set for July 3 at Undo’s Holiday Inn on Three Springs Drive. We have mailed out about 300 invitations all around the United States. We had one of the biggest classes Weir High ever graduated. So far, I think 78 of our fellow students have already passed from this life. Some were very young, some ...

A waste of money

To the Editor, There has not been a bigger waste of our taxpayer money than on eastbound U.S. 22 and some local repaving of roads in the Weirton area. New guardrails were installed when nothing was wrong with the old ones. More concrete poured when any other time we got simple repaving. And what has changed in our community? More people now can leave faster going to work in Pennsylvania than in our own town. Every road in Weirton in the last few years was repaired but one, in front of the city building and police headquarters is a joke to say the least. Still, we have congestion ...

Of gods and aliens

To the Editor, The thought humans evolved from an ape takes man’s ego to the height of creating gods. The religious teaching is God created man in his image. But the naysayers believe man created God in man’s image, to the point of creating ugly aliens running around the universe in hot rod vehicles that travel three or four times the speed of sound. So hints Tucker Carlson of Fox News. Sorry Tucker, the black moving dot you keep showing is just a black dot. There is nothing to fear as long as one has the real thing in one’s heart. Recognizing our heroes

To the Editor, Weirton Lions Club recently initiated its most recent community project — Flags for Heroes — a display of American Flags sponsored by individuals from the community and honoring both active military and those veterans, both current and deceased — who have given of themselves to protect our freedoms. We would like to take this opportunity to thank individuals outside of our club who assisted us with this project. It took many hands to plant the flags and prepare the display. Do-over time in Weirton

To the Editor, Doing a do-over in Weirton. City officials, let’s make a rule of conscience. No companies that have been run out of other cities or other states for unsavory practices can locate in Weirton. Companies have a right to come in and negotiate what kind of access they need for there to be investments. But any company that is not going to invest $20 million in its plans will rape the area, use no union workers, pay cheap wages and leave within five years. Dangers of cancel culture

To the Editor, Merriam-Webster defines the term “woke” as “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice.)” The recent kerfuffle over the Weir High Red Rider logo was largely overblown; more was made of the issue than it perhaps originally deserved. The school’s intent (at least, the stated intent) was never to chuck the whole Native American Red Rider motif, as many of those upset seemed to have thought, but only to stop using one particular logo that some—as many as three whole people, as I read it—found ...
